Euraxess research field: Mountains, transitions, territorial reconfigurations, qualitative approaches, human geography
Expected skills:
Applicants must show a strong interest in teaching as well as a high-level scientific record in accordance with UGA’s ambitions and standard. They must identify with UGA’s values, that is, being open to the world, emphasising ethics and scientific integrity, showing an interest in teamwork and being committed to the community. They should also have a sense of responsibility, in particular with regards to environmental and social issues.
Teaching profile:
As generalists in human geography who can teach about changes and transformations of mountain areas in relation to the challenges of transition and resilience (in a broad sense, taking into account topics such as tourism, development, agriculture, urbanization, food, social innovation, etc.), candidates should be able to demonstrate a specialization in one or more of the above-mentioned themes.
It is expected that the successful candidate:
Is an expert in the (spatial, ecological, social, economic, etc.) challenges at stake in transitions and is able to teach courses at the crossroads of the Mountain-Transitions concepts. They should illustrate these crossroads using thematic approaches such as tourism, agriculture, urbanization, etc.
Contributes to all courses of IUGA’s curriculum in Geography: Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Planning, Master’s degree in Geography, Planning, Environment, and Development (GAED), and Master’s degree in Urban Planning and Design (U&A).
They will contribute to the IUGA's collective life of by taking on teaching responsibilities.
Has an extensive teaching and research experience in a variety of fields (comparative and international approaches, etc.) and is able to teach innovative methodological approaches (qualitative and experimental approaches, action research, participatory methods) and take part in the introduction to research program. He or she is able to teach in English.
Is able to teach in English.
Research profile:
The successful candidate will carry out research on the connections between transitions and mountain areas. They will analyze how these links lead stakeholders to rethink the issues and the reshaping of these specific territories, particularly in their interactions with other areas. The research will be based on fieldwork in France or abroad. They may be applied to extra-European mountain regions, possibly through a comparative perspective.
Although no particular theoretical orientation is expected, the successful candidate must mobilize a framework that makes it possible to observe and analyze the debates on current (ecological, social, political, economic, etc.) transitions in mountain areas, the emergence of tensions over certain practices or resources, the way these tensions are managed and their consequences. The successful candidate will carry out these analyses from the thematic perspective they specialize into: agriculture, food, mobility, risk, tourism, etc. These topics may be cross-cutting in order to grasp the cross-cutting nature of adaptations, social innovations and transitions. Consideration of the dimensions of vulnerability and resilience, ecological and social solidarity, and social and environmental justice will be appreciated.
From a methodological point of view, without excluding other skills that are always welcome, the successful candidate is expected to implement predominantly qualitative and participatory methods of investigation, as close as possible to the stakeholders, in line with Pacte's strategy focused on methodological innovation and co-production of knowledge. Particular attention will be paid to forms of feedback that allow the research to be shared openly.
As part of the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach adopted at Pacte, the candidate will take a stance on the epistemological debates in the discipline and develop a reflexive posture towards their research objects. The ability to practice interdisciplinarity within the social sciences or with other sciences, is essential to join the Pacte research center.
The successful candidate will join one of the three following teams with a focus on the inter-team functioning of the research center: Environments, Social Justice, Cities & Territories. They should be able to take part in the UGA research programs and its IDEX program (ITTEM Labex, Institut des transitions, Zone Atelier Alpes, Sentinelles des Alpes, etc.), as well as in its regional (GREC Alpes Auvergne) and international (ISCAR, Alpine Convention, etc.) research environments.
The successful candidate will have to prove their ability to conduct innovative research to be published in the best French and international journals in geography and in connection with research networks in the field. Fluency in English is essential, in order to be able to publish in that language and conduct international collaborations.
