The Centre for Political Research at Sciences Po (CEVIPOF), in collaboration with the Department of Political Science at Sciences Po, is opening an assistant professorship position in Political Theory (or Political Philosophy) on the topic “Immigration & Democracy”.

The candidate's research work must clearly relate to political theory or political philosophy, whatever the approaches followed (normative theory, grounded theory, history of ideas, contemporary philosophy, applied philosophy, field philosophy, etc.). We will nonetheless prioritize candidates with a strong ability to combine theoretical and empirical research methods and topics.

Pertaining to the growing field of “Ethics of Immigration”, this assistant professorship position is designed to reinforce and complement our expertise in the study of how migration and its political management is challenging contemporary (notably liberal) democracy. Research on such issues may focus on migrants’ experiences or on attitudes from the host society or public institutions. Candidates' research themes may encompass (and are not limited to): impact of immigration, integration or naturalisation policies on democratic citizenship; rights and duties of migrants towards citizens and the State, and vice versa; tensions between the rule of law and popular sovereignty regarding the treatment of foreigners; debates on welfare chauvinism; rising demand for a “right of cultural majorities”; new migratory challenges linked to the environmental issue, including reconciling climate justice and border management, etc.

Research

The successful candidate will conduct his/her research agenda within the CEVIPOF. S/he is expected to play an active role to its collective academic life (e.g. the Centre’s scientific project, General Seminar, « Lundi du CEVIPOF »). As a member of the « Political Theory » team and focus of the 2023-2028 Centre’s Scientific Project, s/he will actively contribute to its activities (“Atelier de Théorie Politique – Paris”- ATPP ; other seminars and academic events). We particularly welcome candidates able to demonstrate their potential to work in synergy with the two other focus teams (“Political Attitudes and Behaviours” and “Institutional Responses and Dynamics”) as well as the transversal focuses (“Emotions – Affects - Democracy”; “Trust”; “Methodological Issues”). Depending on the candidate’s research topic, s/he could participate in Sciences Po’s network and programmes, such as MIDI (“Migrations and Diversity”) or PRESAGE (“Gender Studies Programme”).

Teaching

  • The first three years: 88 hours per academic year
    • 2 classes of 24 hours each
    • 40 hours of others academic duties (e.g. selection and admission interviews; supervision of Master’s theses; end-of-studies jury)
  • From the fourth year: 128 hours per academic year
    • 3 classes of 24 hours each
    • 56 hours of others academic duties.

The successful candidate is expected to teach at any of the three levels: B.A./”Collège universitaire”, Master’s and PhD, and within programmes of a variety of Schools (e.g. Public Affairs, Media and Journalism, School of Research). At least one course will be delivered at one of Sciences Po’s regional campuses (in Dijon, Le Havre, Nancy, Menton, Poitiers or Reims) and at B.A. level. Beyond her/his specific research fields, the Assistant Professor could also teach general BA courses in Political Science or Political Humanities.

The specific workload in teaching will be agreed with the Head of the Department of Political Science and the Director of

CEVIPOF, in consultation with Sciences Po’s Learning and Teaching Directorate.
