Job description

Who are we?

Télécom Paris, a school of the IMT (Institut Mines-Télécom) and a founding member of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, is one of the top 5 French general engineering schools.

The guiding mission of Télécom Paris is to train, imagine and undertake to design digital models, technologies and solutions for a society and economy that respect people and their environment.

We are looking for an Assistant Professor in generative models for artificial intelligence. You will join the Image, Data, Signal Departement (IDS).  The research activity of the IDS department is done at the Laboratory Treatment and Communication of Information (LTCI). The mission of the department is teaching and research in the field of signal, image and data processing. You will also participate to the activities of Hi!Paris, interdisciplinary center on AI & Data created by The Institut Polytechnique de Paris.

Scientific context:

The rise of artificial intelligence and particularly of deep learning techniques has profoundly impacted research for all data modalities: audio, images, videos, text, 3D, etc. In particular, the field of generative networks has recently greatly advanced the state of the art in numerous application fields, ranging from natural language processing to image and video generation. It is therefore naturally that this area has become central in the activities of the three possible hosting teams proposed for this position: S2A (Signal, Statistics and Learning), IMAGES (Image, Modeling, Analysis, Geometry, Synthesis) and MM (Multimedia). These activities are developed for various modalities (audio, image, video, text, 3D) and are core to numerous projects and collaborations (advanced European project ERC, ANR, Cifres theses, CIEDS, etc.).

The development of generative models poses a large number of scientific challenges. The self- or weakly supervised training of these models, the development of frugal models, transfer learning, open numerous avenues of research. Obtaining guarantees and control over these models is also a particularly fruitful topic. Multi-modal data integration and structured data management is also a very active direction at the moment for the development of generative models. There is therefore strong scientific potential on these themes, whether in the fields of audio, computer vision, image processing, etc.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Participate in the design and implement courses in their scientific field
  • Conduct research
  • Participate in the development of partnerships, collaborations, and contractual agreements in their scientific field
  • Foster the recognition of Telecom Paris and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris

Job requirements

To succeed in this role, you have an in-depth theoretical or applied knowledge in generative artificial intelligence, deep learning, data (audio, image, video, etc.). Fluency in written and spoken English is required for this position and you have a PhD.

Other expertise of interest:

  • Expertise in generative AI in one or more of the application areas of the hosting teams (music, speech, audio, computer vision, bio-medical imaging, remote sensing, etc.)
  • Expertise in processing multimodal and structured data (graphs)
  • Self-supervised, sequential learning, transfer learning, domain adaptation
  • Diffusion models, adversarial models (GAN), foundation models, plug-and-play, unrolling
  • Ethics and bias in generative AI systems
  • Expertise in managing open-source projects

Why join us?
You'll be working in a fast-growing, pleasant, green and accessible environment (particularly for people with disabilities) just 20 km from Paris (RER B and C, close to major roads, shared shuttle service from Porte d'Orléans). You will benefit from :

  • Flexible working hours (depending on the department's activity)
  • Teleworking 1 to 3 days/week possible
  • 75% reimbursement of public transport season ticket
  • Proximity to numerous sports facilities, concierge service, underground car park, in-house catering, etc.
  • Staff association at school and department level

How to apply:

To apply, please send the following documents :

  • A curriculum vitae (max 2 pages)
  • A cover letter
  • Report on activities (table of activities) in research (supervision, problems, etc.), teaching. Teaching (title, volume, etc.) and collective tasks (max 4 pages)
  • Teaching statement including a summary of activities, university-level teaching and continuing education project (max 4 pages)
  • Research statement including summary and results of activities and research project (max 4 pages)
  • Copy of three publications
  • Contact information for two references

5 steps selection process:

- Screening application and selection of applications feeting with the required qualifications
- Discussion within the research team to establish a list of shortlisted candidates
- Preliminary interview with Human Resources Department
