Applications are invited for a three-year PhD position starting in September 2025 in the A*MIDEX Chaire d'Excellence-funded project “Nonstationary Models of Biological Signals” (NOMOS), Principal Investigator Prof. Anna Dudek.  According to the requirements of this funding program, candidates should not be currently employed by the University of Aix-Marseille and should have obtained their last degree outside AMU. Interviews with candidates will be conducted in English.

Project NOMOS Overview

Nonstationary signals are at the forefront of modern statistical analysis, as many observed phenomena cannot be adequately modeled by stationary processes. The NOMOS project aims to develop a new generation of nonstationary models and algorithms for analyzing various biological signals. The project will focus mainly on developing innovative models for biomedical signals with irregular cyclicity and exploring potential machine learning applications.

Position Objective: The primary focus of this position is to develop novel models for analyzing nonstationary biomedical signals, establish their statistical properties, and apply them to real data. Implementation of the proposed methods is expected in R or Python.

The role requires the ability to effectively communicate technical material and build both internal and external collaborations. Additional responsibilities may include assisting in the supervision of student projects, supporting the development of student research skills, providing instruction, or planning and delivering seminars related to the research area.

QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED RESEARCH FIELDS, REQUIRED EDUCATION LEVEL, PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, OTHER RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS 

Strong background in statistics.  Knowledge of R and/or Python. Knowledge of machine learning methods is a plus.
