JOB PROFILE/TYPE Post-doc
RESEARCH FIELD(S) Social Sciences and Humanities
JOB LOCATION Aix-en-Provence – Marseille (France)
Within the framework of a partnership between the Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean in Marseilles (Mucem) and the Institute of Mediterranean Societies in Transition in Aix-en-Provence (SoMuM), it is proposed to recruit a post-doctoral researcher as of October 1, 2020, for a 12-month contract (renewable once).
The post-doctoral researcher will conduct a research project on the theme "Living in Times of Crisis. An anthropological approach through objects".
This project builds on the processing of the Mucem's participatory collection "Life under lockdown" in order to extend it and place it in broader contexts, and to shed light on its social consequences. This collection has made it possible to gather objects or documents (photographs, testimonies, handwritten or printed documents, etc.) that embody the experience of confinement, and suggest its immediate or future consequences. But beyond the confinement itself, the objects reveal the impact of the health crisis on our lifestyles, our social ties, our collective memory and our imaginations. They bear witness in ordinary and daily life (family organisation, everyday gestures, work, traffic, solidarity networks or exclusion processes, etc.) to changes in our societies on a large scale (traffic, inequalities, globalisation, the environment, virtualisation). They are both tools and symbols of the tensions between social ties, solidarity and "social distancing", forms of adaptation between inside and outside, between presence and dematerialization, as well as tensions between individual freedom and public management. The objects reflect a renewal of ways of living and expressing oneself in the public space. The corpus thus represents the beginning of an analysis of these issues through the detour of material culture and through the memory and collective dimension of the collections that have been built up. The candidate should ensure the analysis and the documentary treatment of the results of this "Life under lockdown" collection and, propose to enlighten it by complementary fields in relation to his research subject.
These avenues of reflection are part of one of the SoMuM Institute's research fields, entitled "Transitions, long-term destabilisations and crises", which pays particular attention to understanding the transitions of yesterday's, today's and tomorrow's societies. The research project may shed light on some of these questions: what is the contribution of a study in the human and social sciences to the understanding of a crisis situation? How to investigate the crisis and/or the exit from the crisis? What is the researcher's share of responsibility in producing new representations of the world? The Mediterranean area is considered as a fertile ground for experimentation and problematisation in order to understand the major changes (cultural, demographic, economic, political, social) and their destabilising and structuring effects in the short and long term. Interdisciplinarity in the human and social sciences is an asset that enables these processes to be apprehended in their globality and complexity. The candidate will be hosted by one of SoMuM’s research units. He/she will participate in the Institute’s research and training activities (workshops, conferences, training to students), organise networking activities and publish his work.
