Suzhou Institute of Systems Medicine (ISM)

Institute of Systems Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences /Suzhou Institute of Systems Medicine (ISM) is a new type of research institution jointly founded by Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College (CAMS&PUMC), the government of Jiangsu Province, the government of Suzhou City and the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). ISM adheres to the spirit of “Erudite as Avicenna, Benevolent as Nightingale” and serve as a new model that exploits systems biology and translational medicine approaches for discovery and innovation based research and development towards medical and healthcare problems.

ISM occupies a total area of 46,800㎡and will be constructed in 2 phases. Phase 1 project was put into use at the end of 2018, including a 20,000㎡scientific research building, a 5000㎡animal science center and a 5000㎡complex building. Phase 2 is under planning.

29 April 2021, CAMS&PUMC and the Suzhou Municipal Government signed a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement to build Suzhou Base, as part of core base, for the National Medical Science and Technology Innovation System, which aims to deepen the cooperation in Suzhou, and to jointly build a world-class innovative platform integrating research, medicine, industry and education.

ISM currently focuses on systems medicine research in the prevention and treatment of major human diseases as tumors and infectious diseases, also focusing on interdisciplinary integration. High-throughput sequencing and computing platform, immunology research platform, animal experiments, RNA technology platform, and P2 laboratory have been built to provide technical support for the biomedical industry.  ISM will always adhere to the concept of opening up and local integrating, focusing on creating branded academic activities such as "Systems Medicine Forums” and giving full play to the advantages of resources and industrial ecology of CAMS&PUMC, Suzhou City and SIP. In the future, ISM will focus on new disease mechanisms to develop new treatment methods, focus on new drug targets to lead the development of innovative drugs, and focus on new platform technologies to innovate diagnosis and treatment methods. ISM aims to be promoted as an innovative highland with world influence with cutting-edge platforms of lifeomics, metabolism, laboratory animals, chemical biology, molecular imaging, immunology, big data science and artificial intelligence etc., and contribute to the innovative development of Suzhou biomedical industry.
