The Department of Philosophy is responsible for the subject of philosophy in teaching and research within the framework of the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes in Philosophy as well as the teacher training programmes Philosophy and Education, the master’s programmes Political, Economic and Legal Philosophy and Applied Ethics as well as the teaching subject Ethics at the University of Graz. The research of the Department covers questions in theoretical philosophy, history of philosophy, practical philosophy, political philosophy and phenomenology, and also contributes to interdisciplinary research.
At the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities, the University of Graz is seeking to appoint a
Professor in Ancient and/or Medieval Philosophy
(40 hours per week; selection procedure in accordance with Section 99 (1) of the Universities Act (UG); fixed-term employment for 5 years according to the Salaried Employees Act (AngG); expected starting date October 1st 2025)
The successful candidate will work in the field of the History of Philosophy and is expected to teach and conduct research in the fields of Ancient and/or Medieval Philosophy. He/she is expected to demonstrate expertise in the fields of Ancient and/or Medieval Philosophy. Based on his/her historical expertise, the successful candidate will contribute to systematic philosophical discussions and will cooperate with the cluster of excellence “Knowledge in Crisis” or a field of excellence of the University of Graz (e.g. “Climate Change Graz”). The successful candidate will establish local networks especially with the Faculty of Humanities’ core research areas. A readiness for cooperation partnerships in the field of History of Philosophy, which has its main focus on Early Modern Philosophy and the History and Prehistory of Analytical Philosophy, is preferred. The professorship is to maintain international cooperation partnerships and to contribute to science communication with the public. Research activity must be documented by relevant publications at internationally peer-reviewed journals. In teaching, the post holder will offer courses in the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes and supervise final papers in the field of Ancient and/or Medieval Philosophy.

Minimum salary
The minimum remuneration as stated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement is EUR 92.460,20 gross per year. Salary subject to negotiation.
