At the Institute of Applied Physics, in the Research Unit of Surface Physics TU Wien is offering a position as university assistant prae-doc (all genders) limited to expected 4 years for 30 hours/week. Expected start: September 2025.

Tasks:

  • Refine ab initio QED methodology (analytic and numeric) that aims at a reliable description of light interacting with matter for realistic materials
  • Perform simulations for molecular systems at (plasmonic) surfaces, investigate reactivity and spectroscopic changes due to plasmonic and optical interaction
  • Participate in scientific conferences, workshops, and events to present research findings and engage with the academic community
  • Write and publish scientific papers and complete a PhD dissertation
  • Contribute to teaching activities, including supporting courses and mentoring students
  • Supervise and collaborate with students in research projects and international collaborations

Your profile:

  • Master’s or Diploma degree in physics, chemistry or a closely related field,
  • Strong ability to conduct independent, methodical, and responsible research, as well as excellent software development skills (Python and Unix)
  • Ideally experiences in electronic structure theory, molecular dynamics, machine learning, finite-element solvers, and quantum electrodynamics
  • Excellent oral and written English skills
  • Enthusiasm for research and innovation with interest in both scientific discovery and practical applications
  • Interest in theoretical ab initio descriptions
  • Enjoy teamwork, mentoring students and helping to shape a dynamic research climate
  • Strong analytical thinking, strong problem-solving skills, an open communication attitude and the ability to work creatively and collaboratively

Entry level salary is determined by the pay grade B1 of the Austrian collective agreement for university staff. This is a minimum of currently EUR 2,786.10/month gross, 14 times/year for 30 hours/week.
