Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our university community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en
The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University is inviting applications for two tenure-track positions in aerosol science.
The impact of aerosol science spans research fields such as climate change, air quality, health, and various engineering disciplines. The Aerosol Physics Laboratory at the Physics Unit of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS) seeks to answer multidisciplinary questions that keep eluding aerosol researchers. These include the relative roles of primary and secondary particle formation of emission aerosols and the oxidative and reductive generation of particulate matter at the molecular scale. The laboratory employs the latest experimental techniques, including on-line mass spectrometry, to resolve open questions related to particle formation and chemistry. The laboratory’s special strength lies in aerosol technology and its use in indoor air, emissions, ambient and atmospheric aerosol studies, as well as industrial applications.
Job description
The present faculty of the Aerosol Physics Laboratory has strong expertise in experimental radical aerosol physical chemistry, aerosol process modeling, as well as experimental emission and air quality studies. We are now interested in excellent candidates that can complement this expertise and strengthen the profile of the laboratory. A successful candidate could have a background either in experimental, modeling, or computational studies. Strong expertise in the following subfields or a combination thereof is a special asset:
Experimental:
Modeling and computational:
If successful, you will be placed at the level of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor, based on your experience and expertise. While in the early stages of your career the focus is on research, in time you will be expected to contribute increasingly to teaching, curriculum development and student supervision.
You will be expected to pursue and supervise world class scientific research in your topical area. Active collaboration with local, national, and global research partners, as well as industry is encouraged. You will be expected to secure substantial external funding for your research as well as nurture interactions with relevant stakeholders for societal impact.
Requirements
You should have a doctoral degree in physics, chemistry, atmospheric science, environmental science, environmental engineering, materials science, or a related field. You should also have experience in scientific or technological research in academia. Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:

We offer
We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active and truly international research community. The multidisciplinary research environment offers opportunities to develop research expertise via collaboration, e.g., with different fields of engineering and natural sciences. We offer world class infrastructure in experimental aerosol science as well as access to outstanding computing resources of the national Centre for Scientific Computing (CSC) and Tampere Center for Scientific Computing (TSCS).
Initial appointment as Assistant Professor / Associate Professor is for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured faculty member after the first five-year period. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
You will be supported by a start-up package that will ease your transition to TAU and in setting up your research group. The start-up package will be negotiated on the basis of your individual needs and may contain several elements from our financial instruments.
Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4500-4900 EUR/month, for an Associate Professor approximately 5200-5700 EUR/month, and for a Professor a starting salary will range between 6300-6900 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.
