We are looking for an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in the field of Advanced Microelectronics Packaging. 

The positions are placed within the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University in the Unit of Electrical Engineering (EE). The EE unit covers a full range of research and educational areas, including Electronics and Embedded System, Electrical Energy Engineering, Communications Engineering, and Radio Systems. Our unit includes 13 full professors, 8 tenure track professors, and roughly 200 staff members. We collaborate closely with several industrial partners and maintain an active presence in the international scientific community.

Site description

Our research encompasses a wide range of activities, including advanced microelectronics technology, System-on-Chip, thin-film devices and circuits, wireless communications and RF technology, printed and flexible electronics, and hybrid integration technology. Integrated photonics and microelectronics have been selected as a strategic profiling area at TAU to be further strengthened by new tenure-track appointments during 2025-2030.

Tampere University is also involved in the Wide bandgap (WBG) ChipAct JU pilotline, where we focus on the development and testing of WBG devices and their integration into advanced modules. The pilot line at Tampere will advance next-generation semiconductor technology with applications in motor control systems, battery management systems, fast charging systems, photovoltaic inverters, power supply systems, and 5G/6G cellular base stations. The Pilot Line infrastructure will also enable the development  of techniques and processes for hybrid System-in-Package (SiP) fabrication (SiPFAB), enabling the integration and packaging of semiconductor chips into complete systems.

Furthermore, Tampere University, Tampere City, and Pirkanmaa region have joined forces and devised an ambitious development program for microelectronics, i.e. Chips from Finland initiative. The strategy targets to also strengthen the EU’s Chips Act design excellence in the region with a strong business cluster around wireless communications, intelligent machines, and imaging. To this end, our  System-on-Chip Hub (SoC Hub) focuses on large, top quality prototype chips fabricated on the smallest transistor node and aiming at high technology readiness level.

Job description

We are seeking highly motivated applicants with a track record of internationally competitive research in Advanced Microelectronics Packaging

The advance of high-performance microelectronics systems requires an increased attention on packaging aspects, including heterogenous integration technology and co-design of hybrid system. The appointed tenure will lead new research and education activities on advanced microelectronic packaging and hybrid integration research ensuring links with existing activities in flexible electronics, complementary microelectronics technology, and photonics.

Especially, we are seeking applicants with expertise for example in the following application areas:

  • Packaging technologies for advanced electronics platforms, such as GaN, SiC, GaAs, addressing specific challenges for RF, higher power, and high temperature operation.
  • Co-packaging and integration of photonics and high-speed (RF) electronics.
  • Heterogeneous integration of active components on silicon photonics platforms
  • Testing, reliability, and failure analysis of advanced microelectronics packages
  • Multi-physics modeling and simulations.
  • Co-design and electronic design automation.
  • Solution for thermal management in integrated photonics, and WBG modules.

Requirements

  • You should have a doctoral degree in the field of electronics or electrical engineering, materials engineering, physics or a related field and have experience in research in academia in the respective field or fields.  
  • Proven expertise and professional experience in Advanced microelectronics packaging.
  • Strong knowledge and practical expertise of current trends, tools, and methodologies in advanced microelectronics packaging.
  • You need to be fluent in English to succeed in the required tasks.
  • Good cooperation and interaction skills.

The following will also be considered as advantages in the selection process:

  • Strong industrial collaboration experience, demonstrating the ability to bridge academic and industry perspectives.

Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:

Assistant Professor

We require:

  • an applicable doctoral degree.
  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly at a high international level.
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.

Associate Professor

We require:

  • an applicable doctoral degree.
  • a record of independent scholarly activity.
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.
  • ability to lead a research group and a record of winning external research funding.
  • a record of international scholarly activity.

Professor

We require:

  • an applicable doctoral degree.
  • high-level scholarly expertise and an international level of achievement.
  • experience of leading scientific research activities.
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction.
  • a record of winning external research funding.
  • a record of international scholarly activity.

We will expect you to demonstrate how your profile aligns with the strategy of Tampere University and with the profile of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences and describe how you would work in a multidisciplinary environment. Ideally, for more senior level appointments, you will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group. Track-record of industry collaboration is considered as an asset.

We offer 

Initial appointment for assistant professor and for associate professor is for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured member of the faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well-supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to faculty positions. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees. 

Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. Typical starting salary range will be from 4,500 to €5,250 EUR/month for an assistant professor and from 5,250 to 6,100 EUR/month for an associate professor and from 6,250-7,250 EUR/month for a professor. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.
