NIOZ is looking to recruit a highly motivated research scientist to join our Department of Estuarine and Delta Systems (EDS). The PI will develop world-leading research working on the processes that define estuarine dynamics, including biogeochemical cycles, ecology, (bio)geomorphology ecology and hydrodynamics, involving experimental and/or modelling approaches. We will consider scientists working across a range of disciplines that complement the strengths within our Department. The post is available to scientists from a wide range of career stages, from experienced post-doctoral scientists (Tenure track) looking to move to the next stage of an independent research career, to senior scientists (Principle Investigator) wishing to continue in their leadership of internationally-recognised research.
THE INSTITUE
NWO-NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is the Dutch national oceanographic institute and principally performs academically excellent multidisciplinary, fundamental, and frontier applied marine research, addressing important scientific and societal questions pertinent to the functioning of the ocean and seas. NIOZ includes the National Marine research Facilities (NMF) department, that operates a fleet of research vessels and the national pool of large seagoing equipment, and supports excellence in multidisciplinary marine research, education, and policy development.
THE DEPARTEMENT
The Department of Estuarine and Delta Systems (EDS, NIOZ-Yerseke) studies the interplay between biota, hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics and biogeochemistry, and how these shape estuarine, deltaic and coastal environments, within the context of natural and human-induced environmental changes. Our department assigns central importance to multidisciplinary approaches that combines state-of-the-art biophysical, biochemical, ecological and physiological measurements and experiments, with remote sensing and numerical modelling, to create in-depth understanding of the processes that control estuarine and delta systems. One important focus for the department is how our research can create value for society.
THE ROLE
The EDS department is looking to recruit a scientist working at the interface of biogeochemical cycles and marine ecological processes (involving estuarine sediments and/or the overlying water column), or ecology. We will consider field scientists, modellers or experimentalists, working across a range of disciplines that complement the recognised strengths within our Department. We will recruit across a range of career stages, from experienced post-doctoral scientists (Tenure track) looking to move to the next stage of an independent research career, to senior scientists (Principle Investigator) wishing to continue their leadership at the international level.
We offer a lot of freedom for the selected candidate to shape their own research line(s) within the multidisciplinary research approach of the EDS department. While NIOZ provides for a wealth of scientific collaboration, world-class laboratories and equipment, and technical support.
THE CANDIDATE
We are looking for an excellent, highly motivated scientist with a PhD degree in ecology, biology, marine sciences, biogeochemistry or equivalent. You will have an excellent track record in experimental (laboratory and/or field) or modelling work, and accompanying publications, and a clear long-term vision for your research, that complements the research lines at the EDS department. You will have experience of winning grant funding, or be at the stage where this is your next ambition.
You will interact with scientists from the EDS department and other Royal NIOZ departments, which are: Coastal Systems, Ocean Systems, and Marine Microbiology and Biogeochemistry, and create opportunities for joint research projects. You are expected to acquire external funding, both from national and European funding agencies, to support your research programme. You will be keen to support and interact with PhD and undergraduate students, and to work with our excellent support and technical staff.

CONDITIONS
Employment of this full-time position at Royal NIOZ is by NWO-I for 40 hours a week.
Salary compliant with CAO-WVOI (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Research Institutes) scale 11, 12 or 13 depending on relevant experience.
