Luke is seeking a Doctoral Researcher for a fixed-term position. We offer an opportunity for an article‑based PhD on the topic of performance‑based policy instruments in the context of cost-efficient reduction of nutrient loading.

Job description

The Doctoral Researcher’s tasks include the development and application of both analytical and numerical models. The models developed and applied in the position will address nutrient cycling (nitrogen and phosphorus) as part of the economic optimisation of agricultural production, from both the perspectives of firms and a societal regulator. In particular, the work aims to analyse the effectiveness of existing performance based policy instruments and to develop new results oriented environmental policy approaches suitable for managing agricultural nutrient flows.

The doctoral research topic is partly linked to the GREENHOOD project, funded under the EU Horizon Europe programme. The project examines nutrient recycling, the reduction of environmental impacts from agriculture, and circular economy solutions from regional and societal perspectives. The research focuses particularly on a Finnish case study (the Archipelago Sea catchment area), but the doctoral dissertation is not required to be limited exclusively to the project’s themes. The dissertation can be developed more broadly as an environmental economic analysis of performance based policy and operational models.

The Doctoral Researcher will participate in the preparation of scientific articles and in research supporting policy design. Work can be carried out with flexible working hours and partly remotely. The employment contract is initially for two years. The aim is to enable the continuation of doctoral research thereafter through complementary funding. Consequently, the work may include participation in the preparation of continuation funding and research funding applications, supported by more senior researchers.

Our expectations of the applicant

  • We are seeking a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher with the potential to develop into a leading expert in performance based systems and with the readiness to produce an article based doctoral dissertation, including practical fieldwork with stakeholders. The selected candidate is expected to apply for the right to pursue doctoral studies at a suitable university, unless they already hold an active doctoral study right. Luke supports the establishment of doctoral supervision arrangements in cooperation with university partners. We expect:
  • a relevant Master’s degree in economics, environmental and natural resource economics, agricultural economics, industrial engineering and management, systems analysis, or a closely related field
  • strong skills in mathematical modelling and quantitative analysis
  • interest in research on environmental policy, agricultural nutrient loading, and performance based policy instruments
  • readiness to pursue an article based doctoral dissertation
  • fluent command of the English language Qualifications considered an advantage:
  • programming experience, for example with Python, Matlab, GAMS, or Julia
  • studies in environmental economics, agricultural economics, or nutrient cycling
  • experience with optimisation models, systems analysis, or policy evaluation
  • familiarity with EU agricultural policy or research projects
  • previous experience in scientific writing or stakeholder oriented work
  • fluent command of the Finnish language Please attach the following documents to your application:
  • curriculum vitae (including the contact details of 1–2 referees)
  • motivation letter
  • transcript of academic records
  • possible publications or other scientific work samples (including theses)
  • description of a research idea (optional)
