Job description

The position includes DNA analysis, mainly using Nanopore technology. The work includes both laboratory work and handling/analysis of DNA data. Using Nanopore sequencing we study large amounts of mitochondrial sequence from dogs for large-scale population genetic analysis. The tasks include:

  • DNA extraction, PCR and library preparation
  • Management and bioinformatics of large data sets from the Nanopore platforms, mainly PromethION, and some Illumina and Sanger data
  • Sequencing with Nanopore MinION when required

A large part of the work will be done in a laboratory environment with preparation and amplification of samples via PCR, as well as library preparation. After the sequencing of the libraries, the work will go into a new phase with an emphasis on bioinformatics and phylogenetic analysis. We are therefore looking for a candidate with lab experience who enjoys working in the lab, and who is interested in bioinformatic analysis, basic programing and scripts.

What we offer

  • A position at a leading technical university that generates knowledge and skills for a sustainable future.
  • Engaged and ambitious colleagues along with a creative, international and dynamic working environment
  • Work in Stockholm, in close proximity to nature
  • Guidance on relocating and settling in at KTH and in Sweden.

Requirements

  • A graduate degree or an advanced level (higher education) in molecular biology, biotechnology or equivalent competence.
  • Experience from laboratory work in molecular biology
  • Proficiency in basic computer operations, basic command of Shell commands or scripting (e.g., Bash), understanding of basic concepts and commands in Linux/Unix operating systems, and basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

Preferred qualifications

  • Knowledge or skills in bioinformatic analysis of DNA sequence data, especially Nanopore
  • Experience of laboratory methods relevant for the job: PCR, library preparation, purification with magnetic beads. Preferably in 96-well plates.
  • Experience of phylogenetic analysis, preferably of mitochondrial genomes
  • Independence in planning and executing experiments
  • Good collaborative abilities
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
