Job description

The Department of Machine Design and Integrated Transport Research Lab (ITRL) is looking for a System Architect for our testbed in autonomous vehicles and intelligent transport systems: AD-EYE (www.adeye.se). The development of AD-EYE has progressed to also include the realization of reliable high-level intelligence in real (physical) vehicles, smart infrastructure, and digital "online" models (so-called digital twins), as well as their interaction in intelligent transport systems. This development is driven by several opportunities to improve, for example, traffic safety, performance, and road maintenance, along with associated research questions.

The main assets linked to AD-EYE include software (including open source), commercial simulation tools, and hardware (including several powerful simulation computers and specialized embedded systems). AD-EYE has been successfully implemented in KTH’s concept vehicles, with the goal of also implementing it in other vehicles in collaboration with industry partners.

The portfolio of research projects is continuously evolving, and your responsibility as an architect is to ensure that the development of AD-EYE progresses efficiently. In your role, you will carry out technical development, strategic planning, and engage in dialogue with research projects/project managers to ensure that AD-EYE's development aligns with the research projects' needs. You will translate these needs into requirements that are grouped and prioritized for timely implementation. You will act independently with external stakeholders, assess needs and technical solutions, and not hesitate to propose alternative solutions and say no when necessary. You will work closely with the AD-EYE board, act as a leader, and guide the development team by developing/refining processes and schedules. Your role will involve leading the actual development and maintenance of a growing codebase for automated driving functions, related models, and scenarios, including implementing new features, documenting existing ones, creating test cases, designing, and conducting experiments in simulations or with vehicles to collect data.

Some of the key responsibilities include: (1) architecture work and technical development of AD-EYE; (2) leading the development team; (3) representing the AD-EYE team in research project meetings, supporting the research director in technical discussions, and reporting on AD-EYE progress; (4) coordinating the development of AD-EYE, including reviews and monitoring, prioritizing requirements, and planning to maximize the use of available resources; and (5) establishing and maintaining relationships with industrial partners, research groups, and suppliers, as well as proactively establishing new collaborations.

In addition to the specified responsibilities, this role requires independence, as you will do what is necessary daily to improve the testbed, including investigating strategic changes, procurement, project planning, and designing work processes.
