Doctoral student in advanced light microscopy

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as in architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Job description

The laboratory of Ilaria Testa, Department of Applied Physics, Royal Institute of Technology KTH located at the BioImaging platform in SciLifeLab (Stockholm, Sweden), is looking for a candidate with background in neuroscience with interest in advanced light microscopy. The candidate will apply and further develop novel and sensitive super-resolution microscopes based on RESOLFT and non linear structure illumination in combination with ad-hoc image processing approaches.

I’m a new appointed group leader aiming to build a team of physicists and biologists with the goal of pushing the spatio-temporal resolution of lens-based microscopes to a new level by developing next generation super-resolution microscopes. The primary focus will be to develop labeling and imaging strategies to study cellular processes at a molecular relevant length scale (5-50nm). During my post-doc in the group of Nobel Laureate Stefan Hell, we have developed several super-resolution microscopes based on single molecule detection (PALM, GSDIM) and targeted switching (STED/RESOLFT) approaches. In particular, we have shown for the first time that RESOLFT microscopy can image living cells with nanometers resolution and its potential in tissues imaging. We now would like to apply this concepts within the field of neuroscience for a better understanding of the synaptic protein machineries.

Experience in fluorescence imaging, cloning and cell cultures would be a strong asset.

The employment is four years with a possibility of maximum up to five years. Up to 20 percent department duties are included in the employment.

Qualifications

A suitable background for this position would be a Master of Science in Neuroscience with a specialization in imaging. In addition to the traditional academic merits, a relevant degree project, international experience, and language skills are regarded as advantageous qualifications.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.
