Department/Office:  Département des Ressources Biologiques et Environnement

Unité de recherche Halieutique Manche-Mer du Nord

Laboratoire Halieutique de Boulogne sur Mer

Duty station:  Boulogne-sur-Mer, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, FR, France

Starting date on the job:

Deadline for applications: 26/03/2019

The Institute and the recruiting department

French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea, Ifremer, through its research work and expert advice, contributes to knowledge of the oceans and their resources, to monitoring of marine and coastal environments and to the sustainable development of marine activities. To these ends, Ifremer conceives and operates tools for observation, experimentation and monitoring, and manage the oceanographic databases.

Created in 1984, Ifremer is a French public institute of an industrial and commercial nature. It is supervised jointly by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Marine Affairs.

Ifremer undertakes research missions, offers expert advice and acts as a funding agency.

Ifremer performs targeted applied research to address the questions posed by society (climate change effects, marine biodiversity, pollution prevention, seafood quality etc.). Results include scientific knowledge, technological innovations, and systems for ocean observation and exploration. Partnerships may be public, private or a combination of the two.

Ifremer works in a network with the French scientific community, also collaborating with international partner organizations, in the frame of several national and international projects, including contractual activities.

Description of the offer:

The recruiting department

The Channel & North Sea Fisheries Research Unit (Unité Halieutique Manche Mer du Nord, HMMN) is investigating the dynamics of marine fisheries, ecosystems and biodiversity, subject to the pressure of fisheries and other human activities in a global change context, as well as evaluating management strategies to mitigate the impact of these pressures.

HMMN hosts three technological facilities: a Sclerochronology National Center, a Trophic Ecology Platform, and a Zoo- (and Ichtyo-) plankton Taxonomy and Ecology Platform.

Under the leadership of the Head of the Channel and North Sea Fisheries Research Unit (HMMN), within the Boulogne s/mer laboratory, he/she will investigate the functioning of trophic networks in marine ecosystems.

General areas of responsibility

The main duty is to investigate thoroughly the functioning of the English Channel and Southern North Sea trophic networks, and more specifically the pivotal role played by ichtyo- and zooplankton, bentho-pelagic coupling, and the ecosystem effects inferred by, and on, fisheries dynamics.

To that purpose, he/she will apply some of the ecosystem models, which have recently been calibrated in the English Channel and the Southern North Sea, in tight interaction with the fish diet empirical analyses carried out within the Trophic Ecology Platform and the research developed within the Zooplankton Taxonomy and Ecology PLatform.

Principal activities

  • To conduct research activities on the functioning of exploited marine ecosystems’ trophic networks and their interactions with fisheries;
  • To quantify, using ecosystem models, the pivotal role played by ichtyo- and zooplankton, and by the strength of bentho-pélagic coupling, in the structuration of the English Channel & Southern North Sea marine ecosystem and the dynamics of the fisheries resources it supports;
  • To evaluate the combined effects of fisheries management strategies and of climate change in the functioning of the English Channel & Southern North Sea marine ecosystem and the sustainability of the fisheries resources it nurtures;
  • To evaluate the ecological feasibility of developing new fisheries targeting lower trophic compartments (e.g., zooplankton);
  • To apply existing ecosystem models to identify functional groups for which diet information should be collected in priority, so to optimize the sampling of fish individuals analyzed within the Trophic Ecology Platform;
  • To contribute to the ICES stock assessment process (e.g., red mullet) in the North Sea and Eastern English Channel regions, and to promote assessment methods building in trophic interactions explicitly;
  • To conduct scientific projects and seek appropriate funding sources ;
  • To disseminate research findings via peer-reviewed publications;
  • To supervise doctoral and postdoctoral fellows.

Collaborative work environment

  • Internal collaborative relationship

HMMN team, other research units from the RBE department (unité  Physiologie et Fonctionnement des Organismes Marins - PFOM, unité Sciences et Technologies Halieutiques -  STH, unité Economie Maritime -  EM, unité Ecologie et Modèles pour l’Halieutique -  EMH), and from the ODE department ODE (Unité LITTORAL, unité DYNECO).

  • External collaborative relationship

ICES research community, French or foreigh research institutes specialised in fisheries science and marine ecology.

Profil recherché

PhD in numerical ecology / fisheries science,

Postdoctoral expérience.

Required knowledge, skills and characteristics

  • Knowlledge, skills and abilities
  • Knowledge in ecology on the functioning of trophic networks ;
  • Capacity to understand the details of, and to apply, complex models;
  • Good practical knowledge of R, or another programming language;
