ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY

Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.

YOUR TASKS

  • You support the coordination and substantive implementation of the European REBUILD project, in which seven organisations from Belgium, Greece, Cyprus and Latvia collaborate on climate education, digital skills and innovative school field trips.
  • You contribute to the development and quality assurance of the GeoTour Framework, transforming traditional excursions into inquiry-based, interactive and digital learning activities.
  • You develop and edit educational materials, templates, case studies, tutorials and training modules for teachers, with particular attention to the educational use of GIS, artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR).
  • You support the organisation and substantive delivery of training sessions, webinars and collaborative activities for teachers from different European countries.
  • You support schools, teachers and students in designing and implementing GeoTour excursions, local data collection and the use of digital geographical tools in the field.
  • You provide substantive and pedagogical feedback on maps, field reports, digital learning outputs and proposed climate adaptation and resilience strategies.
  • You contribute to project reporting, quality assurance, impact assessment, dissemination and policy recommendations for integrating AI, AR and GIS into education.
  • You work closely with international project partners, participate in online and in-person project meetings, and contribute to clear, transparent and results-oriented communication across the consortium.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Geography, Geomatics or a closely related field.
  • You have demonstrable knowledge of and affinity with education, both secondary and higher education. Experience as a teacher, lecturer, teacher educator, educational adviser or in a comparable educational role is a strong asset.
  • You understand how subject content, pedagogy, assessment and curriculum objectives are translated into feasible learning activities for teachers and students in different educational contexts.
  • You have a solid background in geography and preferably experience with GIS. Knowledge of, or willingness to rapidly develop expertise in, AI and AR applications for education and fieldwork is important.
  • You can translate scientific and technical information into clear, usable and pedagogically sound materials for teachers and students.
  • You have strong written and oral communication skills and can report, present, facilitate and provide feedback in a professional manner.
  • You work in a structured and accurate way, monitor deadlines and deliverables, and can take independent responsibility in a project-based environment.
  • You collaborate effectively in an international and interdisciplinary team: you communicate openly and respectfully, coordinate proactively, take cultural and organisational differences into account, and seek constructive solutions when expectations or interests differ.
  • You are flexible and results-oriented, show initiative, and can work within agreed procedures, quality frameworks and shared project objectives.
  • You have sufficient digital skills to work confidently with online collaboration platforms, digital learning resources and data and mapping applications.
  • An excellent command of English is essential, both spoken and written, as English is the working and communication language of the international consortium.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of definite duration for the period from 1/10/2026 to 31/1/2029 for a 20% appointment.
  • Your contract will start on 1/10/2026 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate).  Click here for more information about our salary scales.
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
