ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY

Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.

YOUR TASKS

  • At least 90% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation
  • Objective: The PhD research aims to develop efficient separation strategies for bio‑aromatic components derived from lignin depolymerisation processes, with the ultimate goal of producing multiple product streams that meet the required specifications for end‑use applications.
  • Context: Lignin, a macromolecule with significant potential as a renewable feedstock, offers a sustainable route for the production of aromatic compounds. Numerous strategies have already been investigated to convert lignin into valuable bio‑aromatics; however, these processes typically result in complex mixtures that require further separation for practical applications. Designing effective separation technologies remains challenging due to the limited understanding of the thermodynamic properties of these bio‑aromatic systems.
  • Within this PhD project, you will:
    • Identify the key components in the reactor effluent that are relevant for separation and valorisation.
    • Investigate the thermodynamic behaviour of these components and their mixtures through modelling and experimental validation.
    • Design and optimise a separation and purification process capable of producing bio‑aromatic product streams that meet end‑user specifications.
    • Disseminate research results through scientific publications and conference presentations.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering Technology or a closely related field.
  • You have a strong interest in the thermodynamic behaviour of and separation trains for complex mixtures.
  • You are interested in both modelling and experimental work.
  • You have basic experience in or a clear interest in experimental research, such as:
    • phase equilibrium measurements,
    • physicochemical characterisation,
    • analytical techniques (e.g. GC, HPLC, NMR).
  • Experience with Gaussian and/or COSMO‑RS simulations is an asset.
  • Familiarity with ASPEN Plus or similar process simulation software is a plus.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamic models such as PC‑SAFT, UNIFAC, or related approaches is advantageous.
  • You have an affinity with bio‑based, circular, or sustainable chemistry.
  • You possess a critical and analytical mindset.
  • You have an excellent command of English, both written and spoken.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

INTERESTED?

Apply online through the e-recruitment system before the application deadline (see above). We do not accept late applications or applications that are not submitted through the online system.

Your application must include the following documents:

  • In the field ‘CV’: your CV and a transcript of your academic record (merged into one pdf file)
  • In the field ‘Cover letter’: your application letter in pdf format
  • In the field ‘Diploma’: a transcript of the required degree (if already in your possession). If you have a foreign diploma in a language other than our national languages (Dutch, French or German) or English, please add a translation in one of the mentioned languages.
  • In the field “other documents”: a reference letter, an overview of your study results

Note that the maximum file size for each field is 10 MB.

As Ghent University maintains an equal opportunities and diversity policy, everyone is encouraged to apply for this position.
