YOUR TASKS
As a Project Manager, you support the coordinator to steer the research projects with a qualitative and effective management. You will have close collaborations with the project coordinator(s) of the granted projects. Furthermore, you will become part of the UGent-MIRO team which currently already provides support in the process of acquiring new innovation projects.
More particularly you will:
• Ensure an agile project execution, starting from the project plan set out in the proposal;
• Build a collective ambition for the granted project with all project partners, i.e. both industrial (automotive and machine building companies) and knowledge (such as universities and RTOs) partners;
• Take the project lead in encouraging researchers to look for new solutions;
• Strive for an excellent and timely execution of the project;
• Follow up the reporting of deliverables, support the project coordinator and take the lead in the technical reporting of the project status to the (regional and European) funding agency;
• Ensure that project results are both industrially relevant and scientifically excellent.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Ghent University is looking for a motivated and skilled project manager to support the coordination and execution of projects in the field of smart and sustainable motion systems. These projects aim to deliver high-impact research and innovation, with a strong dual focus on performance and sustainability. More specifically, the work involves advancing performance with smart machines and robotics, while also enhancing efficiency and sustainability in real-world mechanical and electrical systems.
Ghent University is committed to perform multi-partner research and development projects both in a regional and international framework. Such projects include amongst others Horizon Europe projects, FWO strategic basic research projects, and Flanders Make projects. In these projects we work together with many other Flemish and European Universities, companies, and the strategic research center Flanders Make. Given the growth in the number of projects we are leading and for which we are seeking further growth in quality, efficiency and professionalism, we are looking for a motivated project manager.
The project manager will be active in projects within the MIRO research lab. The researchers engineer Machines, Intelligence, Robotics and electro-mechanical systems. They design and develop novel digital solutions and real-world components/systems that excel in terms of sustainability, performance, precision, speed and functionality. They bridge their fundamental research and expertise in dynamical systems and control, thermo-fluids, electrical and mechanical engineering; to strategic and applied research. The application domains cover amongst others manufacturing, energy, automotive, compressors, agriculture, weaving.
The projects in the field of smart machines and robotics are typically on the monitoring and control of mechatronic systems, design of new robotic actuators, leveraging new industry 4.0 concepts such as digital twins, learning from human interactions. In the domain of efficiency and sustainability, projects relate to a.o. the development of novel electrical machines, engineering of mechanical and thermo-fluid components, energy efficiency. The technical project manager will have to face in the projects the evolving challenges and opportunities driven by Europe's Green Deal and the advancements of Industry 4.0. Stakeholders to the projects namely face various technological challenges: digital transformation, automation while being human-centric, quality control and waste reduction, adoption of AI in real-world systems, realizing faster development times and handling techno-economic realities.
• You hold a Master’s degree preferably in (beta) science or engineering;
• Relevant experience in an academic or industrial context;
• Teaming, interpersonal & coaching skills to coordinate collaborations between teams with different technical/scientific background;
• A constructive, dynamic, proactive and open management style (empathic and assertive communication);
• Proficient communication skills in both Dutch and English;
• Special interest in applied research and in the maturation of technologies towards industrial applications/products.
