Your assignment

The Laboratory for Pharmaceutical Microbiology (LPM) at Ghent University (UGent) is looking for a laboratory technician to support ongoing projects. These include a project aimed at further developing a live biotherapeutic product for the treatment of chronic lung diseases.

As Laboratory Technician your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with and reporting to researchers within the LPM.
  • Performing in vitro cell culture and host-microbe interactions experiments to evaluate efficacy and safety of potential therapeutic candidates, including using physiologically relevant 3-D lung cell cultures.
  • Performing in vitro microbiology experiments including antibiotic susceptibility assays, biofilm experiments, evaluation of novel antimicrobial compounds.
  • Technical and logistical support for the practical course in microbiology.
  • Processing and analyzing samples from animal studies, including for histology.
  • Executing a variety of molecular biology assays, including molecular biology techniques such as RNA isolation, cDNA synthesis, qPCR, Western blotting, ELISA.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate records of experimental procedures, data, and results.

Your profile

We are seeking a motivated candidate with the following qualifications and skills:

  • Educational background: Bachelor’s degree Biomedical Laboratory Technology or similar.
  • Technical expertise: Knowledge of and experience with techniques in microbiology, cell biology, host-microbe interactions, immunology, and molecular biology.
  • Knowledge of working in a lab: Health and safety, GLP.
  • Personal characteristics: You are well organized and accurate, a good communicator, and have good interpersonal skills. You can work well in a team and independently.
  • Basic computer skills: Text processing, spreadsheet, presentations, basic statistics.
  • Language skills: Good command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written.
