YOUR TASKS

In this position, you will support and optimise the operation of the emergency and intensive care unit of the Small Animal Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Your main tasks will be:

  • Providing outstanding healthcare and service to emergency and hospitalised companion animals (dogs and cats).
  • Helping expand the emergency department and organising the intensive care unit.
  • Carrying out clinical activities at specialist level, demonstrable by having obtained the title of Diplomate in Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC of ACVECC).
  • Consult with other veterinarians and specialists from the various disciplines on treatment plans.
  • Participating in emergency, night and weekend on-call duties on a rotating basis.
  • Providing clinical education to veterinary students of the master years.
  • Supervising the students, interns and residents in the reprocessing of emergency patients (dogs and cats).
  • Supervise the students, interns and residents in the healthcare of hospitalised patients.
  • Supervise clinical master's theses.
  • The candidate should be willing to develop and supervise an ECVECC training programme.
  • Train and supervise veterinary assistants working in the hospitalisation department.
  • Contribute to postgraduate training activities.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You have a Master's degree in veterinary medicine. For degrees obtained outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence from NARIC must be submitted. Diploma requirements must be met by the date of appointment.
  • You hold a Diplomate degree from the European or American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC or ACVECC).
  • Teaching experience and participation in continuing education, conferences etc on Emergency and Critical Care of companion animals is essential.
  • You have an interest in scientific service and are willing to supervise clinically oriented research.
  • You have excellent didactic, interpersonal and communication skills to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.
  • You have demonstrable experience that can contribute to the quality of practice-based teaching.

Considering the job content, there are high expectations in terms of social and organisational skills. The candidate must be able to work together as part of a team, must be able to communicate fluently with the owners and with staff from different disciplines and of different levels (specialists, veterinarians, veterinary assistants, technical staff and students) and must have the necessary flexibility and stress-resistance to change the sequence of tasks according to service needs. Being able to communicate fluently in Dutch (or willing to learn Dutch) and in English (or willing to learn English) is also a requirement.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a 80% contract of indefinite duration.
  • Your contract will start on 1/10/2025 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate).  Click here for more information about our salary scales.
