YOUR TASKS

  • At least 50% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation

Subject of the dissertation: BE-PRIORITY - Advancing precision medicine in pediatric oncology through multi-omics

Cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related mortality among young children in developed countries. Precision medicine offers a transformative approach by tailoring treatment decisions to the unique molecular characteristics of each patient’s tumor. However, while companion diagnostic tests for targeted therapies are increasingly available for adult cancers, their utility in pediatric oncology is limited due to small patient populations and the scarcity of effective biomarkers. International precision oncology initiatives have demonstrated the feasibility and clinical impact of comprehensive molecular profiling in guiding personalized therapies for children with cancer. We launch BE-PRIORITY (Belgian Precision Medicine Program for Pediatric Oncology), Belgium’s first national precision medicine initiative for childhood cancer, that aims to implement individualized therapeutic strategies through advanced molecular diagnostics, adopting and optimizing standards and methodologies proven effective by our international counterparts.

The first stage of the project focuses on implementing and optimizing an ultra-fast, comprehensive multi-omics workflow, utilizing single-molecule sequencing to simultaneously profile the genome, transcriptome, chromatine accessibility and methylome. This study will encompass all pediatric solid tumor types (neuroblastoma, sarcoma and brain tumors), with an anticipated annual cohort of approximately 250 patients. Newly identified therapeutic targets will undergo functional validation using ex vivo patient-derived organoids and in vivo patient-derived zebrafish and murine xenograft models.
