The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.
Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.
Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will play a pivotal role in the development of an innovative multi-scale full-field microscope, contributing to a new era of scientific exploration. You will participate in the operation and further development of the ID03 beamline, with a mission to advance dark field X-ray microscopy (DFXM)-a newly developed technique that uses hard X-rays for full-field imaging of phase, orientation, and strain of crystalline volumes embedded within polycrystalline samples. This position involves close collaborations with institutes across Europe, including the Danish Technical University, Chalmers University, KU Leuven, and industrial partner OCAS, a trademark of ArcelorMittal.

Your responsibilities include:
- Developing experimental and data analysis protocols for pink beam DFXM by taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the newly-built EBS beamline ID03
-  Integrating coarser grain mapping methods such as 3DXRD with DFXM
-  Acquiring data to progress our understanding of deformation and recrystallization in metals
- Developing and implementing algorithms for high-dimensional experimental data

You are enthusiastic about X-ray imaging, physical metallurgy, scientific computing, and the management of large datasets. You thrive in collaborative environments, possess exceptional problem-solving skills, and demonstrate the ability to work both efficiently and independently. To be considered for this position, you should possess the following qualifications:
- A PhD degree in physics, materials science or a related field, obtained within the last 3 years.
- Strong experience in programming and experimental X-ray techniques.
- Demonstrated interest in hardware and software development.
- Proven ability to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and facility users.
- Proficiency in English.

Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 or 18-month period.
