We are looking for a postdoc to join our team within the Research Area Drinking Water Resources and Systems, at the Division of WET and Department of ACE. Become part of our innovative group and contribute to exciting research in drinking water distribution system modelling within a collaborative and dynamic environment.

About us

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering (ACE) tackles contemporary and emerging challenges for the built and natural environment.

The Division of Water Environment Technology (WET) are committed to contribute to the challenges of sustainable development with focus both on urban water infrastructure and natural water systems, solving engineering science problems together with the water industry.

The Research Area Drinking Water Resources and Systems carries out research within the  drinking water supply system, focusing on distribution systems modelling, water and process analyses and health risk assessment of drinking water consumers.

About the research project

The research project the postdoc will work in focuses on water savings in drinking water distribution networks, on both the supply and demand side. One objective is to develop and test new models and methods for detecting, predicting, and mitigating water leakage by combining, for example, sensor data and ML/AI. In addition, the project will also address the replacement of drinking water with alternative water sources, such as greywater reuse, as a possible measure to reduce water use. Finally, focus on the coordination of technology, policy, incentives, risk assessment, and collaboration, which are key factors for enabling sustainable water use.

The models developed in the project should be applicable also for water utilities, providing decision support in their daily work on updating pipe renewal strategies and active leakage detection. These efforts will contribute to water savings by reducing leakages and pipe failures, and by introducing new technologies that use alternative water sources. They will also help reduce energy use and optimise economic resources, thereby contributing to resilient and sustainable water supply systems with reduced water and energy footprints.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • A doctoral degree in a water engineering topic or a closely related field. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Experience in risk assessment and system modelling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • You are expected to have some teaching experience and to demonstrate strong potential in both research and education.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree has been obtained within the last 3–4 years.
  • Experience and/or formal training in decision support (incl. cost-benefit analysis), digital twin modelling, machine learning, analysis of disaggregated water consumption data and Python programming, are considered advantageous.
  • An early start of the postdoctoral position is also an advantage.

What you will do

  • Work with master’s and doctoral students, as well as senior professors, within the research area.
  • Perform hydraulic modelling of water distribution networks, including integration with digital twins.
  • Analyse operational data from distribution systems to develop models for leakage detection.
  • Assess the water balance of alternative water sources and demand-side measures within the supply system to mitigate the impacts of peak consumption.
  • Evaluate system risks and provide decision support to stakeholders in water utilities.
  • Contribute to the supervision of master’s and/or PhD students.
  • Have the opportunity to engage in teaching at the master’s level.

The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.

Contract terms

The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The position requires physical presence throughout the employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date at the university.

What we offer

  • As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about  working at Chalmers  and our benefits  for employees.
  • A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg
  • Read more about Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc. at Move To Gothenburg.
