Join the Communication Systems Group (Department of Electrical Engineering) to advance trustworthy radio localization and sensing. We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with expertise in AI, machine learning, and statistical inference to develop robust learning and inference methods for radio-based positioning and sensing, combining physical modeling, probabilistic inference, and modern machine learning for future transportation systems.

About us

At the Department of Electrical Engineering research and education are performed in the areas of Communications, Antennas and Optical Networks, Systems and Control, Signal processing and Biomedical engineering, and Electric Power Engineering. We work with sustainable and smart solutions to societal challenges, such as energy efficiency and electrification in areas ranging from transport and production systems to communication solutions and biomedical engineering.

The Division of Communications, Antennas, and Optical Networks (CAOS) conducts research and education in wireless and optical technologies for communication and sensing. Combining fundamental and applied research, we address challenges in sustainability, security, and next-generation communication systems. The division also plays a key role in engineering education, particularly within the Master's programme in Information and Communication Technology.

About the research project

Future automated transport systems will increasingly rely on digital infrastructure to support safe vehicle localization in challenging urban environments. Cellular infrastructure offers a promising complement to satellite-based positioning, but safety-critical applications require more than accurate estimates. In this project, you will develop novel methods for trustworthy infrastructure-assisted positioning using cellular observations from roadside infrastructure. You will investigate how model mismatch, distribution shifts, calibration errors, and corrupted measurements affect localization performance, and develop hybrid solutions that combine model-based estimation, machine learning, and integrity monitoring. The project, funded by Chalmers Area of Advance Transport, is conducted in collaboration with researchers in wireless sensing, intelligent transportation systems, AI security, and trustworthy machine learning at Chalmers and AI Sweden.

Who we are looking for

The following requirements are mandatory:

  • A doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Signal Processing, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a closely related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the following areas: Machine learning and AI; Probabilistic inference and statistical learning; Uncertainty quantification and trustworthy AI; Statistical signal processing; Localization, sensing, tracking, or robotics; Wireless communications and radio systems
  • Proven ability to conduct independent research and publish in leading international venues.
  • A strong publication record in internationally recognized journals and/or conferences in machine learning, AI, signal processing, communications, robotics, or related fields.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Experience with uncertainty quantification, trustworthy AI, robustness, adversarial machine learning, or AI safety.
  • Experience with Bayesian methods, graphical models, differentiable programming, or physics-informed machine learning.
  • Experience with simulation frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, CARLA, or Sionna.
  • Experience in transportation systems, autonomous systems, robotics, or cyber-physical systems.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and scientific computing.

What you will do

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will:

  • Develop novel methods that combine machine learning, probabilistic inference, and physical modeling for localization and sensing.
  • Investigate robustness to model mismatch, distribution shifts, calibration errors, and adversarial perturbations.
  • Develop methods for uncertainty quantification and integrity monitoring in safety-critical systems.
  • Build simulation and evaluation frameworks using state-of-the-art transportation and wireless-system tools.
  • Publish research results in leading journals and conferences.
  • Collaborate with researchers at Chalmers, AI Sweden, and industrial partners.
  • Support supervision of MSc and PhD students.
  • Contribute to future research proposals and project development.
  •

The successful candidate will have substantial freedom to shape the research direction within the overall project framework.

Contract terms

The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.

What we offer

  • A joyful, supportive, and lively intellectual environment with researchers from around the world.
  • As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about  working at Chalmers  and our benefits  for employees.
