The University of Wuppertal is a dynamic and research-oriented campus university. In accordance with its mission statement ‘Understanding, communicating, shaping’; it faces the social challenges of science, education, culture, economics, society, technology, and the environment. The university is an active member of networks in the region as well as in national and international cooperations. About 24,500 people study, research, or work at 9 schools, research institutions or in university administration.

The University of Wuppertal invites applications for a professorship in social stratification. The position will be based in the School of Human and Social Sciences. We are looking for an outstanding personality who will continuously develop this area in research and teaching.

DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS

  • As the future holder of this position, you will conduct empirical research on topics in social structure analysis and the analysis of social inequalities, for example in the areas of gender, education, labour market, income and wealth, and social mobility. You will systematically integrate migration sociology perspectives into your past or future research.
  • You will contribute to teaching in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in social sciences and sociology and participate in their further development.
  • You have a strong publication record, particularly in peer-reviewed journals. You have an international orientation, demonstrated for example through research stays abroad, international collaborations, conference presentations, or publications in the above-mentioned areas in internationally visible journals.
  • Initial experience in acquiring third-party funding and/or in participating in research projects is desirable.
  • We expect a willingness to cooperate and have an active role in the development of shared research priorities within the school and across schools, for example by contributing to the university’s research area “Shaping Sustainable Societal Transformation”. You are willing to share your perspectives on social inequalities participate in the school’s internal focus area “Social Inequality and Discrimination”, or cooperate with the Institute for Educational Research (IfB).
  • You will actively participate in academic self-governance.
  • It is expected that you will achieve adequate German language skills (level C1) within the first two years of employment, if necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completed degree (master or equivalent from university or university of applied sciences) in sociology or social sciences
  • Special aptitude for academic work, usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate, a topic relevant to the advertised position is desirable
  • Pedagogical aptitude, which is proven by appropriate previous experience or, exceptionally, demonstrated in the appointment procedure

You are able to demonstrate your qualification for the position by internationally visible publications, relevant teaching experience, international collaborations, the successful acquisition of third-party funds, participation in national or international committees, boards, or similar bodies, etc. Please enclose relevant certificates and supporting documents with your application.

Starting as junior professors, they are appointed normally as civil servants for a period of three years. These positions are extended for three more years if the junior professors have successfully passed an interim evaluation. After a positive tenure evaluation in the sixth year, the candidates are appointed associate professors (legal basis: W 2, permanent position). Both evaluation procedures are based on a target agreement which is part of the appointment negotiations. The target agreement and a written confirmation verifying the negotiated financial and personal resources of the professorship are an integral part of the acceptance agreement between university and candidates.
