The department of Physics is seeking two Doctoral Researchers for the project ''Efficient quantum materials simulations'' (EffQSim), funded by the Jane and Aatos Erkko foundation and supervised by Senior Lecturer Riku Tuovinen in the research group Non-equilibrium quantum materials at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The positions will start on the 1st September 2024, or as agreed, for a fixed term of 4 years.

The EffQSim project's main goal is to establish a unified, efficient, and accurate computational framework to explore next-generation quantum materials. Recent experimental advances have spurred demand for computational studies of materials with atomic-scale and femtosecond resolution. Addressing the complex interactions of electrons and bosons, the project develops tools for quantum materials simulations to tackle problems like energy transfer and heat dissipation. This is achieved via the non-equilibrium Green's function theory for simulating many-body dynamics, overcoming its computational challenges with modern, linear-scaling algorithms. This method will map electrical properties of two-dimensional materials and model light-matter interaction in nanojunctions, extending both the understanding and methodology of quantum materials research. The project offers possibilities for international collaborations in Poland and Spain.

Who we are looking for

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work as a part of a research team
  • Develop skills in non-equilibrium many-body theory and computational methods, and apply them to investigations of scanning-probe schemes for two-dimensional materials or radiation in nanojunctions
  • Present research in international conferences and project meetings and publish the results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion
  • As a Doctoral Student pursue your doctoral studies at the University of Jyväskylä
  • Write a PhD thesis and defend it successfully within the term of the employment

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in physics and a thesis written on a theoretical/computational topic.
  • Good basis in quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and computational methods. Previous experience in non-equilibrium many-body theory is considered as bonus.
  • A high proficiency in spoken and written English.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of a Doctoral Researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The MSc degree required for the position must have been completed before starting the position. Doctoral Researcher needs to be also enrolled in the doctoral programme which can be applied from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection for the position. The employment starts with a trial period of six months.
