About the position

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) announces a vacancy as a 50% Associate Professor in Transformation at the Institute of Architecture, to be combined with an active practice in the field. The position involves teaching MA studios in design, seminars on the theories of preservation, and advising diploma students. 

The Institute of Architecture holds a strong position in architectural history and in the field of preservation and transformation of architecture, running a number of studios and seminars, as well as international research projects involving several PhD-students in the field. The Institute teaches at all levels in the school’s curriculum: BA, MA, and the PhD-program. Based on multidisciplinary and critical approaches, the research and teaching span from theory to practice, encompassing the history and theory of preservation, technology and materials, methods and techniques, as well as heritage policy and circular methodologies. Anchored in a studio-based teaching tradition, the emphasis is on architectural design, including a wide range of drafting techniques, model-building, surveying, archival research, and writing. We are presently emphasizing strategies for working with architecture from the recent past, spanning from monuments to the vernacular. The preservation program’s extensive national and international collaboration with partners from academia and architectural practices are constantly strengthened through new research projects and teaching initiatives. AHO’s executive master in architectural heritage was established in 2005, and AHO runs, with Arkitektskolen Aarhus, Kungliga Kunsthögskolan and Aalto University, a Nordic executive master in architectural heritage (NORDMAK).  

The workplace is AHO´s location in Oslo and physical presence is expected.

Arkitektur- og designhøgskolen i Oslo (AHO) lyser ut en fast 50% stilling som førsteamanuensis i bevaring og transformasjon ved Institutt for arkitektur, som skal kombineres med aktiv praksis innen fagfeltet. Stillingen innebærer bl.a. undervisning på mastergradsnivå, ansvar for seminarer i bevaringsteorier og veiledning av diplomstudenter. Andre oppgaver innen undervisning, forskning, utvikling og administrasjon kan komme. 

Institutt for arkitektur har en sterk posisjon innen arkitekturhistorie, arkitekturvern og transformasjon, og driver en rekke studioer og seminarer samt internasjonale forskningsprosjekter med flere PhD-studenter innen feltet. Det undervises på alle nivåer på instituttet: grunnundervisning, MA og PhD-programmet. Basert på tverrfaglige og kritiske tilnærminger, spenner forskningen og undervisningen fra teori til praksis, og omfatter restaureringshistorie og -teori, teknologi og materialer, metoder og teknikker, samt kulturarvspolitikk og sirkulære prosesser. For tiden retter vi oppmerksomhet mot arkitektur fra nyere tid, både monumental- og vernakulærarkitektur. Skolen er forankret i en studiobasert undervisningstradisjon, der vi legger vekt på arkitektonisk design, inkludert et bredt spekter av tegneteknikker, modellbygging, oppmåling, arkivforskning og formidling.  Tranformasjonsprogrammets omfattende nasjonale og internasjonale samarbeid med partnere fra akademia og arkitektpraksis styrkes kontinuerlig gjennom nye forskningsprosjekter og undervisningsinitiativer. AHOs videreutdanningsmaster i arkitektonisk kulturarv ble etablert i 2005, og AHO driver, sammen med Arkitektskolen Aarhus, Kungliga Kunsthögskolan og Aalto University, en nordisk executive master i arkitektonisk kulturarv 

(NORDMAK).

Duties / Aktuelle arbeidsoppgaver

• to teach and supervise MA/diploma students  
• to develop the preservation and transformation curriculum through studios and seminars in collaboration with colleagues and actors within the field 
• to participate in research projects in the field of transformation and circular architecture 
• to develop international teaching collaborations   
• to occasionally partake in the post-professional MA in Architectural heritage and NORDMAK  
• to carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the program  
• other applicable tasks within teaching, research, development and administration at the Institute of Architecture

• Undervise i transformasjon gjennom studio- og fordypningskurs, primært på masternivå 
• Utvikle undervisningsprogrammet i samarbeid med kolleger og andre aktører  
• Delta i forskningsprosjekter innen transformasjon og sirkulærarkitektur 
• Utvikle internasjonale undervisningssamarbeid 
• Veilede diplomstudenter 
• Delta i post-profesjonell MA i arkitektonisk kulturarv og NORDMAK etter behov 
• Utføre administrative oppgaver i henhold til instituttets behov 
• Andre oppgaver kan forekomme

Qualification requirements/ Kvalifikasjonskrav

• Applicants must hold a MA in Architecture 
• Extensive practical experience as an architect within the field of preservation and transformation  
• Academic or artistic production within the field of architecture equivalent PhD level. Professional quality, development potential, breadth in competence and innovation in architectural practice will be prioritized, in this order.  
• Documented broad and relevant teaching experience, acquired through pedagogical education or experience in teaching and supervision. The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document formal teaching qualifications (minimum formal requirement is a 200 hrs pedagogical program) will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period. 
• The successful candidate should demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, she/he is expected to reach proficiency equivalent to level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) within three years. Potential to contribute to the long-term development of the academic and research environment at the Institute and to initiate joint projects. 
•  Experience with and ability to build collaborative (international) networks.

We are looking for an international profile in the field, with a portfolio that displays an innovative and critical approach to preservation and transformation. The applicants will be assessed on the basis of artistic criteria and the quality of their architectural work. Originality and innovative thinking are preferred to quantity. • Formell akademisk kompetanse eller kunstnerisk kompetanse innen arkitektur, tilsvarende PhD-nivå, innen relevante fagområder. Profesjonell kvalitet, utviklingspotensial, bredde i kompetansen, og nytenkning i faglig praksis vil bli prioritert, i denne rekkefølgen 
• Evne til å bidra til langsiktig utvikling av det akademiske miljøet ved instituttet, og til å initiere og bidra til felles prosjekter. 
• Dokumentert bred og relevant undervisningserfaring, oppnådd gjennom formell pedagogisk utdanning eller erfaring i undervisning og veiledning. Dersom den aktuelle kandidaten ved tiltredelse ikke kan dokumentere formelle undervisningskvalifikasjoner (minimum formelt krav er et 200 timers pedagogisk program) vil vedkommende bli pålagt å gjennomføre programmet innen en toårsperiode. 
• Den aktuelle kandidaten bør beherske både engelsk og et skandinavisk språk som arbeidsspråk. Hvis den som ansettes ikke er flytende i et skandinavisk språk, forventes det at hun/han oppnår språkkompetanse i norsk tilsvarende nivå B2 i det felles europeiske rammeverket for språk (CEFR) innen tre år fra tiltredelsen.
