The Science, Engineering & Technology Group of KU Leuven Campus Kulak at Kortrijk has a vacancy for a full-time academic position in Applied Mathematics (under the auspices of KU Leuven Faculty of Science, Department of Mathematics). All tasks related to this position are primarily localized and carried out at KU Leuven Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, and require an active presence at this campus. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research record and with teaching competence in Applied Mathematics. Both junior and senior profiles are eligible for the position offered. Junior profiles will be appointed as tenure track assistant professor with an evaluation after 5 year. Senior candidates can either start at the level of associate professor, professor or full professor depending on the candidate’s qualifications and academic experience.
The Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk organises the Bachelor programs in Sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Informatics, Biology and Chemistry), including options towards farmaceutical, engineering and bio-engineering study programs. Hence, it is a very multidisciplinary environment, both from educational point of view as for research. At present, the mathematics research of the group is represented in its research groups Algebraic Topology and Group Theory (pure mathematics) and Mathematical Physics (modelling and simulation of physical phenomena & signal processing). As a member of the senior academic staff of the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, you will also belong to the Department of Mathematics and the Faculty of Science in the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of KU Leuven. The administrative language at KU Leuven is Dutch.

Duties

Research

We expect that you will develop research activities in the field of applied mathematics and/or mathematics with physical background that complement and strengthen the existing research initiatives at Campus Kulak, and fits within the Department of Mathematics. Complementarity in the theme of Mathematical Physics (modelling and numerical simulation of physical phenomena and technical applications, for instance via digital twins) is an asset. You are encouraged to set up collaborations with other researchers at Campus Kortrijk as well as at other campuses of KU Leuven. In view of developing your own research program, you are capable of acquiring research funding in a competitive setting, and you are proficient in setting up national as well as international research collaborations. Furthermore, you are supposed to serve as an advisor to PhD-candidates and to publish in international leading journals within your field of research.

Teaching

Your teaching tasks will consist of several mathematics courses at Campus Kulak Kortrijk, in the study programs within the Science, Engineering & Technology Group or in service education provided by this group. This includes basic courses in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics (for a diversity of academic programs) as well as more advanced courses in the Bachelor of Mathematics itself. Since the language of education for first Bachelor courses at KU Leuven is Dutch, the teaching assignments require an immediate and thorough knowledge of Dutch (C1-language level for Dutch is required for teaching). Your teaching duties can change depending on the evolution of the study programs at Kortrijk and can constitute a significant part of your duties. As an element of the educational and pedagogical profile of KU Leuven Kulak, active interest and professionalization in educational quality and training is expected.

Service

You are keen in finding regional, national or international opportunities for collaboration with companies and other partners outside the university. You represent the Science, Engineering & Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk, your department, your faculty and your group in external activities and you operate as primary contact between the university and its regional partners. You actively participate in one or several outreach activities such as science-communication, lifelong learning or societal debates.

Profile

You have a PhD in Sciences: Mathematics, a doctorate in Engineering (e.g. Mathematical Engineering Technology), or another equivalent degree with research experience in Mathematical Physics or Applied Mathematics. Your research expertise should be visible through numerous publications in international leading research journals.
You are able to present a research plan that exhibits the added value for the regional, national and international recognition of Kulak, with specification of relevant collaborations with other partners inside and outside the university.
You have proven qualities for providing academic teaching. Since the selected candidate should be able to be quickly assigned to various teaching assignments of first Bachelor courses in Dutch, you must hold a language certificate Dutch CEEC level C1 at the start of your appointment. Before teaching a class assignment in English, you will be given the opportunity to gain proficiency in the English required for this purpose.
You have a personal vision and a clear perspective on academic teaching and education organisation.
You have organisational skills and a cooperative attitude. Leadership qualities in a university context are required. You will be involved in service-tasks related to outreach of your own research and teaching, and the research and teaching by the Science, Engineering &Technology Group of Campus Kulak at Kortrijk.

Offer

We offer a full-time employment in a multidisciplinary and intellectually challenging environment. KU Leuven Kulak is part of a research-intensive, internationally oriented university with fundamental as well as applied research interests, aiming at international excellence.
Depending on your qualifications and academic experience, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researches are appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and a positive evaluation, they are permanently appointed as an associate professor.
The position starts on September 1, 2024.
