Background
Your research activities are situated in the research group of Environmental Biology (Department of Biology) and the Center for Environmental Science (CMK), a multidisciplinary research institute in the field of environmental sciences. http://www.uhasselt.be/cmk

Job content
You are conducting your doctoral research at the Centre for Environmental Sciences at Hasselt University. The research is part of the "Environage" project. The Limburg Birth Cohort (ENVIRONAGE: www.uhasselt.be/limburgsgeboortecohort) is a unique study that has been investigating the influence of genes and the environment on the health of children in Limburg since February 2010. More than 2500 mothers and children are being followed from birth to young adulthood to gain insight into the effects of factors such as air pollution and genetic factors on their development and health.
We are looking for a motivated PhD researcher interested in conducting research on the blood metabolome in newborns in relation to micro- and nanoplastics and air pollution. The research will focus on the analysis of metabolome data and the exposome, aiming to better understand the complex interactions between the environment and health.
You are part of a large, interdisciplinary institute with a broad international and national network. You participate in the Doctoral School of Sciences & Technology. As a PhDstudent you will conduct research, write and publish scientific articles, participate in (inter)national conferences with the aim of writing a PhD dissertation. You will also have some limited teaching tasks.

Profile

  • You have obtained a master's degree in data science, bioinformatics, biology, biomedical sciences, or an equivalent degree.
  • You have strong analytical skills and you are interested in processing complex datasets.  
  • If you have demonstrable interest and/or experience in omics data analysis, preferably in the field of metabolomics, (meta)genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, or genotyping that's an advantage.
  • You can work independently and as part of a team.
  • You are fluent in written and oral communication in both Dutch, and English. 
  • You are able to clearly present and report research hypotheses, results and discussions of experiments, both orally and in written.

Offer
You will be appointed and paid as PhD student.
We offer you a contract for a period of 2x2 years (after positive evaluation).
