We are looking for a motivated AI engineer with an interdisciplinary interest for computational biology/biotechnology to join the Laboratory of Multi-omics Integrative Bioinformatics (LMIB). The LMIB, headed by Prof. Alejandro Sifrim, is part of the Leuven Institute of Single-Cell Omics (LISCO) and aims to develop novel computational strategies for the analysis of large-scale datasets generated by cutting-edge spatial and single-cell biotechnology platforms, and their applications in a wide variety of biomedical/biological domains. This position is embedded within the Innovation Lab of LISCO, which serves as a hub for interdisciplinary experts in single-cell and spatial (multi-)omics research at KU Leuven and beyond. LISCO stands at the forefront of this revolution, actively reshaping our understanding of the biology of cells in health and disease through single-cell and spatial omics (SCS-omics) technologies. Our aim is to pioneer innovation, application and clinical translation of SCS-omics technologies, together with the University Hospitals (UZ Leuven) as well as industry. Using cutting-edge SCS-omics, we are committed to unravelling the complexities of human development, ageing, and disease biology, with therapeutic potential in the clinic.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to drive development of innovative machine learning/AI strategies for the analysis of large and highly-dimensional biomedical/biological datasets. In this role, you will design novel algorithms, benchmark them against state-of-the-art alternative methods and collaborate closely with our interdisciplinary team of data scientists, technologists and experimentalists.

This position offers an exceptional opportunity to expand your expertise, advance your research profile in AI research/computational biology, and make meaningful contributions to the field with far-reaching implications.
  • Conceptualise novel algorithms for the analysis of spatial (multi-)omics data and their biological or biomedical application.
  • Develop the analysis strategy for cutting-edge, novel technologies as part of the interdisciplinary Innovation Lab.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize analyses to ensure a high level of quality and reliability of generated results.
  • Horizon scanning and implementation of novel neural network architectures/models.
  • Interface with national/international partners in academia and industry to develop customized analysis pipelines.
  • Be co-responsible for the successful completion and timely delivery of project milestones.
  • Collaborate with the team to translate technical and biological insights into compelling grant applications.
  • Report and communicate progress in meetings, publish scientific articles, and participate in international conferences.

Profile

  • PhD in data science-adjacent fields (bioinformatics, computer science, AI, biostatistics, bioengineering, biotechnology) with a strong publication record.
  • Experience with bioinformatic analyses (transcriptomics, proteomics, genomics, metabolomics, etc.).
  • Experience with implementation and benchmarking of deep neural network architectures/classical machine learning data analysis strategies.
  • Experience with PyTorch and high-performance compute environments.
  • Experience with single-cell and/or spatial biology technologies is a plus.
  • Experience with multi-modal data analysis, representation learning and/or computer vision are a plus.
  • Experience with troubleshooting.
  • Genuine interest and commitment to technology development and innovation.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently together with a creative problem-solving mentality.

Offer

We provide full-time employment in a stimulating international work environment equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure. Initially, we offer a 2-year postdoctoral position with the possibility to extend the contract. Candidates are encouraged to apply for additional (inter)national funding and fellowships.
You will be based in Leuven, a historic, dynamic and lively city in the heart of Belgium, within close proximity to major European capitals. KU Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally-oriented university that conducts fundamental and applied scientific research.  It is highly inter- and multidisciplinary focused and strives for international excellence.
