Assistant / Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Bedrock Geology

Assistant / Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Bedrock Geology

The Faculty of Science and Engineering invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track) in Bedrock Geology. The announced position is placed in the Geology section of the Department of Geography and Geology within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The working will be conducted within the Geohouse (https://geohouse.fi/), which is geoscientific research and education environment formed by the geology units of the University of Turku and the Swedish speaking Åbo Akademi University, and by the Archaeology unit of the University of Turku. It is a dynamic environment using three languages (Finnish, Swedish, English) and comprises six professors and an additional staff of 25 persons within research and education. The research conducted in the Geohouse is primarily focus under the following topics: i) Regional bedrock geology of the Fennoscandian shield (crustal structures, geochemical evolution and magmatic processes, as well as on economic geology related to ore-forming processes). Complementing the regional studies, digital geospatial modelling and applied structural geology have recently been developed significantly. ii) Quaternary terrestrial, lacustrine and marine sediments are studied to understand past and future climatic, water quality and other environmental changes. iii) The geochemical environmental studies focus on acid sulfate soils, lake and Baltic Sea studies, and the geochemistry of rocks. iv) Archaeologists work especially on the Iron Age, and the historical period of Finland and the Baltic Sea Region.

For the position of Assistant Professor, we seek highly talented and already merited researcher beyond his post doc phase yet still at his / her early academic career, and who has shown potential and innovation in research and teaching. Candidate for Associate professorship will have a distinguished academic career and an established international reputation in his field, as well as an excellent publications record and success in acquiring external research funding. The expertise of the candidate must be within the field of bedrock geology, and the expertise should strengthen the research and education profilation of the Geohouse. We expect that a candidate is initiative, an active member of academic and societal networks and has skills and willingness for co-operation. Contacts with business, trade and industry are valuable assets when filling the post.

A qualified candidate for the position shall have a doctoral degree in geology or geosciences and proven scientific merits and strength within her/his area of expertise. The duties of the professor include conducting and supervising scientific research, teaching – including supervising students, staying up-to-date with the most current scientific developments in the field, and participating in societal interaction and international cooperation in the field. The professor develops the national and international collaboration and networking in geosciences. The Professor is expected to co-operate with other research groups, to form and lead his or her own research group and to obtain external research funding at both domestic and international level. Moreover, the Professor shall actively contribute to teaching and development of the geoscientific education, and take care of the administrative tasks required by the university.

The post is located at the Geohouse, within the historic centre of Turku. The Geohouse is equipped with newly renovated facilities for sample preparations and analysis. Additional to the basic laboratory facilities, the infrastructure comprises an automated this section grinder and associated equipment, micro-XRF, WD/ED-XRF ja ICP-OES –analytic instruments. The Geology section of the University of Turku has access to a wide set of licenses within geospatial and 3D-modelling software packages.

The position is subject to a six-month trial period.

The salary for this particular post is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel (YPJ). The salary shall be determined when drawing up the employment contract.
