The Analysis Group at Institut de Mathématiques de Bordeaux is looking for two Ph.D. students (full time positions for 36 month) to work in the field of systems describing the interaction of water waves with floating structures. From the mathematical viewpoint, the considered systems couple linearized water wave equations, in a Zacharov type description, with Euler-Bernoulli (or Kirchhoff) type plate equations for the flexible platform. The Zacharov type description consists in reducing the coupled system to an equation where the only space variable is the relative position of a point on the free surface. This approach, originally developed in mathematical oceanography, requires important adaptations to include floating flexible structures.
These researcher positions are part of the ModConFlex project, sponsored by the prestigious EU’s Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (HORIZON-MSCA-DN-2021) programme. The ModConFlex project will bring together 17 academic and industrial partners across Europe and Israel to boost the career of 14 doctoral candidates by forming a doctoral training programme to prepare the next generation of researchers on the modelling and control of flexible structures interacting with fluids (water and air). The academia-industry consortium will make important contributions to control theory, AI and energy-based modelling within the context of flexible structures in fluid environments.
