SOLEIL is the French national synchrotron facility, located on the Saclay Plateau near Paris. It is a multi-disciplinary instrument and a research laboratory, whose mission is to run research programs using synchrotron radiation, to develop state-of-the-art instrumentation on the beamlines, and to make those available to the scientific community. SOLEIL, a unique tool for both academic research and industrial applications across a wide range of disciplines including physics, biology, chemistry etc., is used by over 5 000 researchers coming from France and abroad. It is based on a state-of-the-art synchrotron source, both in terms of brilliance and stability. The facility is a “public” company employing about 500 people, founded by the CNRS and the CEA, and partner of the Paris-Saclay University.

This position is in the TEMPO Beamline, of the Experimental division.

TEMPO (Time resolved Experiments on Materials with PhOtoelectron spectroscopy) is a beamline dedicated to the study of the electronic properties of material surfaces and interfaces using soft X-ray photoemission and photoabsorption spectroscopies. The possibility of using time resolved photoemission measurements to study rapid dynamics is unique in Europe. The beamline also offers the possibility of photoemission measurements at near ambient gas pressures. 

The TEMPO beamline has been open to users since 2008. The beamline is composed of 2 principle branches, one for ultrahigh vacuum photoemission measurements and the other for photoemission measurements at near ambient gas pressure. The two branches are equipped with experimental stations giving an ideal environment for the preparation and characterization of surfaces and interfaces in complex systems. The TEMPO beamline is designed for advanced and high quality studies in several scientific domains concerning metallic systems and organic or inorganic semi-conductors. The beamline is optimized for the study of chemical dynamics and relaxation phenomena of systems after electrical or optical excitation. The beamline also enables measurement of the band structure of these different systems.

The beamline forms part of the experimental division at SOLEIL, under the responsibility of the scientific direction of SOLEIL. The head of the beamline team (M/F) will be responsible for a beamline team comprising two scientists, and assistant engineer, with the possibility of doctoral or post doctoral fellows in accord with the scientific program of the beamline. He/she will be responsible for the operation of the beamline according to its design specifications and the operation schedule established by SOLEIL.

I. Mission

The head of the beamline team (M/F) is responsible for promoting and developing the scientific capacities of the beamline, contributing to an organizing local contact procedures for user visits, and developing a research activity in a relevant scientific area.

II. Specific responsibilities

  1. Organize and prepare user visits :
  • Prepare the schedule of user beamtime on the beamline, attributing local contact duties in an equitable fashion between beamline staff.
  • Prepare, in advance, user experiments in accordance with SOLEIL internal procedures.
  • Provide a local contact service for users users in accordance with SOLEIL internal procedures (providing expert advice during experiments, assistance with data analysis as necessary and appropriate for publication of results)
  1. Maintain the quality and performance of the beamline instrumentation at its highest level :
  • Co-ordinate maintenance and development activities on the beamline
  • Handle associated budgets
  • Participate in the installation and testing of new equipment
  • Interact with the different SOLEIL support groups, as well as with external companies
  • Organize and follow the work of the beamline assistant engineer
  1. Conduct original research aligned with the capabilities of the beamline and its instrumentation, and complementary to that of the beamline scientific staff:
  • Remain up to date current research in conjunction with the beamline capabilities
  • Initiate and conduct a suitable research project
  1. Promote the beamline in both the national and international community in order to best exploit its potential :
  • Participate in and / or organize workshops, conferences or other scientific events
  • Monitor the publication of results from the beamline and their wider diffusion
  • Participate (and encourage the other beamline staff to participate) in the organization and evaluation of national and international research (review bodies, review of scientific articles etc.)
  • Participate (and encourage the other beamline staff to participate) in national and international calls for proposals to finance research activities as appropriate
  1. Manage the beamline team and contribute to their career development.
  • Conduct annual campaigns of staff evaluation interviews and career mentoring interviews as required
  • Plan staff training and leave entitlements
  • Assure that staff comply with company working practices
  • Recruit or participate in the recruitment of beamline staff

III. Training and Experience

This post is suitable for an experienced scientist trained to PhD level (or equivalent), and specialized in the physics or chemistry of materials. The candidate should be able to demonstrate a good publication record, and have proven ability in the development of scientific instrumentation.

Experience and expertise essential to the position

  • Project management experience
  • The physics of solids or surfaces explored by photoemission and the methods of data analysis applicable
  • Knowledge of the instrumentation used on the TEMPO beamline
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Professional scientific and technical English (written and spoken)

Complementary experience and expertise which would be advantageous

  • Experience of large scale facilities such as SOLEIL
  • Knowledge of the French language (which is the normal working language at SOLEIL)
  • Experience in computer programming / IT skills
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical design or drawings
  • Basic knowledge of electronics
  • Experience in scientific data analysis
  • Experience in mathematical techniques for data analysis

Human qualities necessary

  • The ability to work in a team or network
  • The ability to manage a small team
  • The ability to manage priorities and work in an autonomous fashion
  • The respect of local working practices and handling of confidential information
  • Adaptability of interaction with different communities

Techniques and methods necessary

  • Mastery of the basics of operating systems and software tools in use at SOLEIL
  • Vacuum or ultra-high vacuum techniques
  • Experimental techniques in surface physics

 

IV. General conditions

The offer concerns a permanent position. The remuneration will be based on the SOLEIL salary scale, and determined according to the professional background, qualifications and degrees held by the candidate.

Constraints of the position: this job requires on-call periods in the evening and the weekend. Also, it can be necessary to work punctually according to staggered hours.

The place of work will be at Synchrotron SOLEIL, which is located in the Paris suburbs (Saint-Aubin), and the position is open to people with disabilities.
