14 PhD positions for the DOC-3D-CERAM project: Development Of Ceramics 3D printing & Additive Manufacturing


We are looking for outstanding candidates, eager to join to a team of PhD students in a European Innovative Training Network.

The DOC-3D-CERAM network, ‘Development Of Ceramics 3D printing and Additive Manufacturing’, is a transnational multidisciplinary EU network focused on ceramics 3D printing or Ceramics Additive manufacturing applied on medical and aerospace fields. The penetration of 3D-printing processes in the ceramics industry remains low. Indeed, the additive manufacturing community addresses mostly metallic or polymeric materials, and the ceramics industry lacks skilled researchers likely to exploit academic proofs of concepts to innovations. The aim of the project is to develop the whole value chain of ceramics 3D printing from elaborating feedstock to testing in products for commercialisation.

This DOC-3D-CERAM team includes six academic, one non-profit association and seven non-academic partners with varied expertise. Structured PhD training at the host institution will include participation in network meetings, workshops and secondments to academic and industrial partner institutes. The young researchers will experience working environments in different countries and have opportunities to create their own personal networks.

  • ESR03: Tailoring calcium phosphate powder properties for 3D-laser printing (Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, France)
  • ESR04: Ceramic formulations for novel hybrid 3D printers (Belgian Ceramic Research Centre, Belgium)
  • ESR05: Manufacturing of bioceramics complex structures by using stereolithography, freeze-casting and rapid sintering processes (Belgian Ceramic Research Centre, Belgium)
  • ESR06: Investigation of pattern definition and sintering speed in 3d ceramic printers (Gazi University, Turkey)
  • ESR07: Design research and post-process optimization of Ca-P based 3D ceramic implants (CERHUM, Belgium)
  • ESR08: Effect of chamber dimension and laser parameters on the ceramic 3d printing (Ermaksan, Turkey)

The successful candidates will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for early stage researchers. The exact salary will be confirmed upon appointment and is dependent on the country correction factor (to allow for the difference in cost of living in different EU Member States). The salary includes a living allowance, a mobility allowance and a family allowance (if married or with children). The PhD funding is for 36 months (i.e. EC funding, additional funding is possible, depending on local Supervisor). In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.

Eligibility criteria

Early-stage researchers (ESR) are those who are, at the time of recruitment by the host, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged. That means typically, for European (or Worldwide) applicants, in the first four years after their Master degree.

Conditions of international mobility of researchers: Researchers are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment. At the time of selection by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.

English language: Network fellows (ESRs) must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training.

Selection process

All applications will be reviewed by a panel made up of at least two members representative of two different organisations. A balance between academic and non-academic members will be sought as well as representation from at least two different countries.

The best candidates for each position, based on their merit, will be shortlisted and invited for an interview. Interviews will be organised shortly after the application deadline and be conducted via Skype.
