The Nanomaterials in health Lab is a truly interdisciplinary environment that conduct pioneered investigations in nanomedicine. We are active in:

  • Provide key contributions to novel personalized strategies of particles design for drug delivery, imaging, or diagnosis. 
  • Characterize, understand, the interaction of particulate materials with cells or tissues. 
  • Pioneered investigations on particle bio-functionalization, particles uptake, accumulation, translocation across biological barriers and their bioresponses.

PhD Position on "Antimicrobial Materials as Antibiotic Alternatives in Dentistry"

Your tasks

  • Design and prepare light-activated nanostructures. 
  • Design and Integrate the nanomaterials in polymeric matrices for the dental splint coatings. 
  • Conduct morphological, structural, and functional characterizations. 
  • Conduct antibacterial and antiviral studies on the coating. 
  • Design and conduct clinically relevant studies for the assessment of the antimicrobial activity and the biocompatibility.

The Ph.D. candidate will participate in writing scientific publications and presenting data at national and international scientific conferences.

Your profile

  • Master's degree in in Biomaterials, Chemistry, Medical Chemistry, Pharmacy or Biology
  • Proficient English skills (spoken and written) 
  • Interested in working in a multidisciplinary environment 
  • Highly motivated team player who is dynamic and curious
  • Previous experience in one or more of the following topics: nanomaterial synthesis, spectrophotometric analyses and microbiology.

The work will be carried out at Empa St. Gallen under the supervision of Dr. Giacomo Reina. The PhD student will be affiliated at ETH Zürich (Prof. Peter Wick).
