High precision atomic spectroscopy / Trapped ions / Frequency metrology / Coherent laser interactions
This experimental work will be carried out within the CIML team of the PIIM laboratory in Marseille, France. This group has an established expertise on trapping and laser interrogation of atomic ions for precision measurements. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with several members of the group to acquire new competences and skills, under the supervision of Dr. Caroline Champenois.
Exploring the feasibility of a THz frequency reference obtained by coherent population trapping (CPT) with three optical photons, using ionized, trapped, laser-cooled calcium atoms. Its realization requires the simultaneous phase locking of the three photon sources (three lasers of frequencies within a range of 130~nm) on a reference consisting of an optical frequency comb, itself stabilized. This exploration involves the elimination of the Doppler Effect thanks to an adapted laser beam configuration and a characterization of the impact of the relative coherence of the lasers on the CPT line.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/EDUCATION & RESERACH REQUIREMENTS/DUTIES
Desired level of education: PhD
Experience required: 1 to 4 years
- Mastery of laser diode based laser sources and their controls.
- Mastery of the fundamentals of the interaction between atoms and continuous lasers.
- Mastery of the stakes of precision measurements.
- A good knowledge of radio frequency ion trapping would be appreciated
